Our
Story

Christmas at Chelsea

There has been a butcher shop at 433 Nepean Hwy, Chelsea since before colour photography, and when we took over in 2020 we knew we had an important role to honour that history and provide our local community with premium, ethical, and sustainably sourced meats and smallgoods.

As third generation farmers from South Gippsland, we are in a unique position to be able to put our own grass fed Glen Alvie Angus beef in the window, alongside free range chicken, lamb and pork from Victoria's best producers.

Our focus has always been on animal health and genetics, we have a robust and consistent pasture improvement program that includes the use of climate-appropriate grasses, seasonal fertilisation, and rotational grazing, that means our cattle have fresh and nutritious pastures that vary depending on the animal's growth stage and nutritional needs.

Unlike some grass-fed operations, our cattle are not

'finished' in feedlots on grain based diets that are incompatible with their digestive systems. They live their entire lives on pasture. Not only is this better for the animals, it reduces the stress-based pH changes that can negatively affect meat quality.

This focus on animal health, as well as the incorporation of genetics from Australia's top Angus studs, including Banquet and Rennylea Angus, is the difference you taste in our beef and the reason people keep coming back to Chelsea Meats.

Chelsea Meats looks very different now than it would have back in the ..., but we try to keep that old fashioned personalised service alive for our community.

No request is too big or small, from ordering in lamb brains to advice about how to cook Boston Butt. We're not your grandfathers butcher shop, but he'd still be impressed by the service.

  • Do you deliver?
Yes! We currently deliver locally to Bayside, within 15km of our shop in Chelsea, Victoria.
  • Is your beef grass finished?
Our beef comes directly from our farms in South Gippsland, and our animals spend their entire lives on pasture. They are not finished in feedlots.
  • Is your meat free range?
Our beef comes directly from our farms, and we source all other meat from free range Victorian producers. Animal health and welfare is our priority, so we only stock meat from producers who share those values and whose animals don't spend their lives in cages and feedlots. Stress has a significant impact on meat quality, so not only is this the way we want to do business, it also guarantees that we are able to bring the best quality produce to your table.
  • How do you give back to the community?
We have a gold coin BBQ every Saturday morning in support of local sports clubs, charities, and community organisations. We are always open to new partnerships with local groups, so if you have an event or organisation you would like us to support please get in touch!
  • Are you gluten free?
All of our meat is gluten free, as are the crumbing and marinades we use to make our heat and eat products. Unfortunately, we haven't yet found a gluten free pastry that meets our standards so all of our pastry wrapped products, like beef wellingtons and sausage rolls, have gluten in them but we are working on it!
  • Do you sell meat wholesale?
We have wholesale partnerships with several local businesses. If you would like to discuss your needs with us, and see whether our free range meats might suit your business please check out our wholesale page and send in an enquiry.
